Meet the Horses

Caring for a herd of horses is no small task and takes a group effort. The amount of organization, attention to detail, daily physical work and vigilance to keep all our equines, both large and small, ready for our students is often not realized by those unfamiliar with horses. Feeding and watering alone is a 365 day a year job. It is a “no holidays off” commitment. Next, there is manure removal, grooming, veterinarian checkups and appointments, deworming, farrier care, tack fitting, and training tune-ups that must be addressed. If a horse becomes sick, lame or just plain grumpy (happens to horses just like people sometimes!), more time and effort is spent in an effort to improve or resolve the issue. When a new horse is needed, there are many hours that are spent selecting and then in acclimating and training before the horse even enters a class. All this work is done so that ultimately our students can enjoy the physical and emotional benefits of interacting with our horses. The physically and mentally healthier the horse, the better the experience at Agape will be for the student. Thank you to all our staff and volunteers who continue day in and day out to put in time and effort towards the care of our horses.

Do you have a favorite horse at Agape, that you would like to “adopt”? Your financial support can bring you many rewards as well as assist Agape in our horse care. Here are our horses currently available for adoption:

  • Randi

Randi - 2007 Horse of the Year Adopt Me

I am a mustang that has been rescued by the Bureau of Land Management, better know as the BLM. My tatoo is under the left side of my mane. It looks like 5 small white dots. The BLM will be at Agapé to check up on me so I will promote therapy riding for my breed.

  • Seth

Seth - 2006 Horse of the Year Adopt Me

I am an American Halflinger and was born in Feb of 93. My owner is Carol Briggs, better know as the craft lady. I have two jobs at Agapé. The kids get to ride me and I sometimes pull a 4 wheel carriage. In 2006 I was chosen Horse of the Year. Blondes Rule!

  • Buddy

    Buddy Adopt Me

I’ve been told I am very sweet and a quick learner. It seems like everyone wants to ride me because my gait is as smooth as butter and I make everyone look good. Before I came to Agapé I was in the Color Guard. I have a beautiful white star on my forehead.

  • Comanche

    Comanche Adopt Me

I am the newest horse on the property having just arrived in early 2010. I am also the only Appaloosa at Agapé. I have very distinctive coloring and am very handsome, if I do say so myself. I am also quite tall, giving my riders a wonderful view when we ride the Agapé trails together.

  • Cowboy

    Cowboy Adopt Me

Cowboy is a 24 year old Tobiano Paint that was donated to us by Jane Howard. Cowboy spent his previous life doing parades, team penning, cutting, and flag ceremonies! He loves people and has adapted to therapeutic riding easily!

  • Darby

    Darby Adopt Me

Darby is a lover with lots of personality. When he pulls his cart he is a show stopper. The kids often put ribbons, beads and scarf's in his mane and tail. Painting his hooves with sparkles is another favorite project for the kids. This little mini has a heart of gold with a willing to please attitude.

  • Duchess

    Duchess Adopt Me

Duchess is a brown and white pinto miniature and the proud mother of Stormy. She also visits schools and hospitals. Kids love to dress her up, braid her mane and tail, and take her for a walk to show off their handy work.

  • Easy

    Easy Adopt Me

I am a slow, steady type who helps to make my riders feel safe. I am very quiet even with students who are nervous and wiggly. I am a horse that is frequently selected for all types of riders so I know that means the instructors feel I am a trustworthy kind of guy.

  • HR

    HR Adopt Me

I was born in 1982. My show record consists of many blue ribbons and several red ones. Making people feel good about themselves makes me happy. I am an Arabian with a lot of heart.

  • Jitterbug

    Jitterbug Adopt Me

I was born in 1989. My name fits me well because I have a fast trot and sometimes holding still is hard for me. I am a guarter pony who loves his job.

  • Lilfoot

    Lilfoot Adopt Me

I recently moved to Agapé from St. Louis to become part of the Agapé family. I am patient and calm, but will canter if you ask me to. I am really excited about being in the Agapé program and look forward to a great second career.

  • Nashee

    Nashee Adopt Me

I am a 17 year old gelding and belong to Tia O'Laughlin, head instructor. She often tells me how much she loves me. When we are cleaned up, both of us sparkle from head to toe. My trot is different from the other horses because I am part Tennessee Walker.

  • Nick

    Nick Adopt Me

Nick is a 16 year old, big, bay Quarter Horse who spent his earlier career as a police horse with the Indianapolis Police Department Horse Patrol. His previous training with the police department is a perfect fit with therapeutic riding. Nick has a calm, gentle presence and is a wonderful mount for our bigger riders

  • Patti

    Patti Adopt Me

Patti is an 18 year old Draft pony that was donated to us by Ben Beechy. She has a sweet, responsive personality and is multi-talented-she is a great riding horse plus pulls a carriage! She has easily adapted to the challenges of therapeutic riding and enjoys her work!

  • Prince

    Prince Adopt Me

Prince is a miniature dark bay gelding that was donated in June of 2006. He is one of the smaller and younger minis. He is 22 and a half inches tall and weighs about 60 lbs. His career is only beginning because he is only a little over a year old.

  • Rosie

    Rosie Adopt Me

This little horse is a giant at Agapé with lots of history. She has touched so many lives over the years it is hard to pick one story to tell you about. Rosie has been in schools, nursing homes, hospitals, elevators at several sporting events, not to mention the Indiana all Morgan Horse Show at the fairgournds. She stands tall at 26 inches and weighs about 85 pounds.

  • Sheba

    Sheba Adopt Me

Several years ago I was a trail horse and could go all day long. Being retired at Agapé is a little slice of heaven. I am a full blooded Morgan mare with a lot of flare. I like when Sara and Denny Patterson come see me with the baby. I was born May, 1986.

  • Stormy

    Stormy Adopt Me

His claim to fame is showing off in nursing homes carrying red carnations for all the people. He is a youngster with a huge career ahead of him. One of these days he will pull a little cart.
