Ginger is not like any other horse at Agape. She’s a draft cross–tall, with an enormous head and a presence that stops you in your tracks. But she’s also a mule – her “other half” is a donkey, lending her extra long ears and an extra-loving, people-pleasing nature. She is simply larger than life.
But it’s not just her size that makes her larger than life – it’s also her personality and spirit that command a room and captivate you.
She quickly captured the hearts of everyone at Agape from staff to riders and volunteers. Volunteer, Carol Wakefield, will tell you that Ginger is a gentle giant, and she should know. Ginger towers over Carol, but the two have built a strong relationship founded in mutual respect.
When someone visits Agape for the first time and meets Ginger, there is a guaranteed moment of silence followed by an exhale and a statement that sounds like, “Whoa…” She takes your breath away. She commands your attention, and then she woos you in, and you can’t help but fall head over heels for her. She makes lessons fun for our riders, but she also teaches them how to be fully present and focused in the moment.
When riders are with Ginger, the challenges of their world, the daily noise, disappointments, and frustrations all disappear because they are with her. For the one-hour they are with Ginger, they are full of joy, and they take great delight in being with her. We all need a “Ginger” in our life; someone we take such delight in that all the worries of our day-to-day fade when we are together. We all need someone who makes us laugh, but will also lay their head in our arms when we need it; someone who takes our breath away…over, and over, and over again. Someone who’s simply… mule-tastic?
Will you help make sure Ginger can keep wowing us with her presence and giving riders the joy of their week through giving this month? You can give a one-time gift, monthly recurring gift, or you can choose to adopt Ginger for a year.
