We can’t do it without them, and they can’t do it without you.
The Agape Herd
Our horses are the heart and soul of our mission, and our riders’ lives are transformed through their unconditional support every day. Scroll below to get to know a little more about each one of them, and if you’re so inclined, consider supporting one of them.
Bo is Mr. Steady Eddy. He is patient and reliable. At times he can be known to be the class clown, but day in and day out he is constant and easy-going. He teaches our riders about how to be consistent, stable and reliable. Did you read about how Bo has helped Matthew?
If you've never loved a mule, JR will make you fall in love with mules. He captures the Enneagram 7 in a mule. He's the first to come up to you in the pasture, hoping to get a good scratch. He loves his herd mates and all of his humans - no matter their size or ability. He is one happy, lovable guy.
Dusty is a strong and fun pony. He enjoys getting out on the trail and the challenge of an obstacle course. He is adaptable as he can carry and teach riders who need full support, as well as those who can ride more independently. Don't let his size fool you - he is a strong teacher.
Daisy is a sweet and beautiful mare. She has one blue eye that draws you in. She is easy to connect with and spent her days before Agape giving trail rides at Brown County State Park. She teaches our riders how to be more confident.
Oh Jasper. Everyone swoons over that thick, blonde, wavy mane. Riders and volunteers love to play with those beautiful locks. Jasper is has had many jobs in his life, but being a therapy horse is definitely the best one.
Butterbean is a hero. He has been there and done that...and probably twice. He meets every rider at Agape exactly where they are at - be it full support or independent. He teaches riders how to be courageous and push for more.
Buzz is a mighty horse in a small package. He is kind, patient, and intuitive which makes him an excellent teacher for our group lessons. He is also a rockstar every summer at camp. He serves hundreds of riders each year varying in all types of abilities and personalities. Small but mighty.
Hero is a Gypsy Vanner, which pretty much means he is gorgeous and you will be jealous of his hair. He is curious and brave. He never bats an eye when going through an obstacle course. This makes him a great leader in the arena. He teaches our riders how to be confident and decisive.
Any Enneagram 7's out there? Beau is your horse 7. He is friendly and loves spending time with people. Give him all the love and attention. This also makes him a reliable teacher for riders of all abilities. He never judges. He serves every rider that opens up to learn from him.
Littlefoot holds the title for being at Agape the longest (besides our mini Rosie of course). He has been a part of our team since 2007. He loves to play games. Put a cone in the arena and he is guaranteed to pick it up and take it to another horse to play. He is a treasure to say the least.
Swoon, swoon Samson. He is a heart throb and a giant sweetheart. You'll be his favorite if you scratch him around his withers and belly. He loves trail riding and his previous career was providing rides at Brown County State Park. Be careful - if you look at him you won't be able to turn away.
Pretty Boy came to us from a rescue. While we don't know a lot about his story before Agape, we do know he was meant to be at Agape for our riders. He is incredibly patient and intuitive. He always takes extra special care of his riders. He teaches us about hope and redemption.
Buddy is a beautiful Palomino at Agape South. He is a lot of fun and especially loves trail rides. This is great for the hundreds of campers he serves every summer with all different abilities. A gentle giant indeed to teach our riders how to navigate through life.
Ronja is actually the half-sister of Hero. Like her brother, she is a Gypsy Vanner so we all battle hair envy with her. She is shy and quiet so she prefers to hide behind her long forelock. Despite her introvert nature, she is steady and reliable and loves to serve.
Big Boy & Smokey are two little rockstars. Big Boy has a big personality and is very smart. He can pick a stall lock like no one else and he loves to drive a cart. Smokey is his partner in crime and is fantastic on visits to schools and nursing homes. Both of these guys will brighten anyone's day.
Lexi served riders at Edelweiss before joining the Agape herd. Prior to serving in therapeutic riding she was at Starting Gaits, which is a Standardbred second career organization after racing for many years. Riders quickly fall in love with horses after working with her. She has been an exceptional teacher and leader for hundreds of people now.
Gunner has extensive western training and loves trail riding. He is a sensitive horse and a great reflection of your emotions, which makes him an exceptional teacher in the arena. This also makes him the horse Enneagram 4. Any 4's out there? He will read you, meet you where you're at, and teach you how to move forward.
Holy mule! This pretty lady commands every room (or every arena) she walks into with her massive presence and personality. Everything about her is enormous - from her ears to her heart. Don't let her size scare you because she is truly sweet and gentle. She captivates everyone and if you haven't met her yet you have to!
Duke, also known as 'The Wonder Horse' by his biggest fans, is a hard-working, focused, and patient guy. He is the type of leader that will do whatever it takes, for however long it takes, to reach a goal. He loves everyone, accepts everyone, and is always up for any challenge no matter how big or small.
Susie came to Agape from Culver Academy where she was a polo horse. How fun is that?! She has a gorgeous coat pattern called varnish, which is unique to Appaloosas. She shines in the arena in our group programming lessons. She teaches participants about how to work with horses, but a lot about how to lead a better life.
Don't let his name fool you - he is NO mistake. Oops joined the Agape team just earlier this year and came all the way from northern Michigan to be with us. He loves people and wants to please. He is a helper by nature and pushes his riders towards reaching their potential. He loves and serves unconditionally, which is our entire mission at Agape.
TC is known for her gentle canter and spirit. She is a great leader for riders who need more support and confidence. One rider said this about TC, 'I really like how TC helps me to be here. She really helps me focus and stop and think about what to do next.' TC helps teach us how to be present and take the next right step forward.
Patch is a sweet American Paint that is as patient as they come. He is the perfect match for new riders because of his gentle spirit. Patch is a pleaser that gives without limits or conditions. He is like the handsome crush who also turns out to be generous and caring...all the best qualities in one horse.
Porschea is a beautiful chestnut mare who recently retired from a long career with the Purdue Hunt Seat Equestrian Team. Any Purdue fans out there? Yeah, we didn't think so. Anyways, she is a forward mover with a smooth, steady gait. This makes her a joy to ride. She is also one of our taller horses so she is able to serve adults, as well as youth.
Moe also recently retired from the Purdue Hunt Seat Equestrian Team. Again, any Purdue fans out there? Quiet, again. Oh well. Just like Moe accepts every rider regardless of ability, we have gratefully accepted Moe onto the team. He is consistent, reliable and fun. He has quickly become a favorite with our riders.
Cici is an adorable miniature buckskin with a bubbly personality. She is energetic and always eager and willing to adventure through challenges. She is fun to watch and work with in the arena, especially when there is an obstacle course and someone willing to trot alongside of her. She'll brighten your day for sure!
This is our smallest riding horse, standing only 12.2 hands tall. River is a Welsh Pony who wants to be your best friend and spend each moment with you. He puts a smile on everyone's face. A volunteer described him as reminding her of Simba from the Lion King singing, 'Oh, I just can't wait to be king!.' Despite his size, he is king of the pasture.
Duke the Dark is a beautiful sooty buckskin. You will have googly eyes over him. Before coming to Agape earlier this year he was at the Brown County State Park Saddle Barn. He is versatile, able to serve a lot of different abilities and sizes. As one of our youngest horses he will be impacting the lives of countless people for years to come.
April is the sweet mare you can just imagine being on a Pantene commercial with her gorgeous, long and wavy locks. She loves to have her beautiful mane brushed and braided. She is also very photogenic as you can see. Besides being a blonde bombshell, she has a kind and gentle spirit to serve. Maybe it's Neighbeline?
Ellie has been a part of the Agape team for several years. She comes and serves riders from October until May each year. She is incredibly steady and reliable. She can normally just jump right into classes after coming in from her other job. She is our pinch hitter and MVP of the barn. We always miss her when she is gone but so excited when she returns.
Sonny is the newest member of our mini team at Agape. He is a spunky little mini that is 10 years old. He loves meeting new people and traveling to new places. Because of this, he is often an Agape ambassador at public events so keep your eye out for him around town. He's our very own 'Lil Sebastian of Agape and we love him!
Duchess is our Queen mini. She has been at Agape for 15 years! She is a star on mini visits to nursing homes and schools. Her presence calms and delights people. She is also the only horse at Agape to have a baby at the barn. This makes Duchess the 'motherly' mini of the herd - mature, calm, and comforting to everyone.
Prince joined the Agape team in 2006. He is our smallest mini but he has a large and in charge personality. Watching him run in the arena with his herd is certain to bring lots of smiles and giggles. He is a willing volunteer to dress up for any holiday. Without a doubt, Prince brings joy and light to everyone he meets.
