What to Expect at Your First Riding Session

Starting something new can bring a mix of excitement and uncertainty, especially when it involves horses. At Agape, each therapeutic riding session is designed to help riders feel safe, supported, and confident from the very beginning.

As a PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center, Agape provides Equine Assisted Services (EAS), including Therapeutic Riding and Equine-Assisted Learning. These programs are thoughtfully structured to support individuals with physical, cognitive, and emotional needs while creating a positive and welcoming environment.

Arriving and Getting Settled

When riders arrive for their first lesson, they begin in the Observation Room alongside others in their class. This space offers time to settle in, take in the surroundings, and meet the instructor. It also allows caregivers to feel comfortable and ask any initial questions.

Before heading into the barn, the instructor ensures each rider is properly prepared. Riders are fitted with an ASTM-SEI approved helmet and checked for safe, appropriate footwear. Once ready, the group transitions to the barn aisle, where they are introduced to their equine partner and the volunteers who will support them throughout the lesson.

How Equine and Rider Pairings Work

Riders do not choose their equine partner. Instead, each pairing is carefully selected by Agape’s Site Manager and instructors to ensure the safest and most beneficial experience.

Several factors are considered during this process. Instructors look at the rider’s physical abilities, balance, height, and overall goals. They also evaluate the equine’s size, movement, and personality. Some equines are especially calm and steady, making them ideal for beginners, while others may be better suited for riders working on more advanced skills.

This thoughtful approach helps create a strong foundation for success while prioritizing the well-being of both rider and equine.

What Happens During a Therapeutic Riding Session

Each lesson lasts about one hour and follows a structured format designed to support both learning and comfort. Riders participate in weekly sessions, typically scheduled in eight-week increments to allow for steady progress over time.

During the lesson, riders can expect:

  • Time in the barn aisle to groom and help prepare their equine partner
  • Introduction to basic horsemanship skills and equipment
  • Practice with foundational riding skills such as posture, rein handling, and steering
  • Simple exercises that help build balance, coordination, and confidence

The session is designed to move at a comfortable pace, allowing each rider to build familiarity and trust with their equine partner and the environment.

Evaluation and Ongoing Support

While riders are initially evaluated before being placed in a class, the first lesson also includes an important observational assessment. Instructors use this time to better understand each rider’s balance, comfort level, and overall riding ability.

Based on these observations, adjustments may be made to improve the experience. This could include changes to equipment, additional volunteer support, or even a different equine partner if needed. These adjustments help ensure that every rider continues in a setting that best supports their growth and safety.

Building Confidence from the Very First Ride

For many riders, the first lesson is filled with emotion. Some arrive feeling unsure or nervous, while others are eager to get started. It is common to see riders begin the session with tension that gradually fades as they become more comfortable in the saddle.

By the end of the lesson, a noticeable shift often takes place. Riders frequently show increased confidence, a sense of accomplishment, and a genuine connection with their equine partner. Smiles, waves to family members, and moments of pride are all part of the experience.

Even those who start off cautiously often leave with a spark of excitement, ready to return for their next lesson.

A Welcoming First Step Forward

Your first therapeutic riding session is not about perfection. It is about building comfort, trust, and confidence in a supportive environment. With experienced instructors, dedicated volunteers, and carefully selected equine partners, Agape creates a space where every rider can begin their journey with confidence.

For many, that first lesson is just the beginning of something meaningful, both in and out of the saddle.
